The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union conducted surveys with 202 gig and platform workers working on digital platforms such as Swiggy, Zomato, Ola, and Uber about their perspectives on the union’s performance and support. TGPWU has over 1,000 active members and has had over 10,000 registered members since its inception.
Through these surveys, TGPWU conducted a first-of-its-kind, worker-led evaluation of our activities and impact. We understood workers’ overall satisfaction with TGPWU, their level of participation in collective action, their awareness of TGPWU’s policy and advocacy efforts, and their assessment of the support provided by TGPWU.
This report highlights the way forward for TGPWU to build our strategy and activities based on the worker-led evaluation. Our key commitments going forward include:
- strategising concrete steps towards overall member satisfaction and improvement in working conditions
- continuing our fight to protect workers’ freedom of association and collective bargaining rights
- addressing and resolving problems faced by members more effectively
- providing support in arranging insurance and other protections for workers
- building better communication channels with workers about updates on policy changes and regulations
The report showcases major wins achieved by TGPWU in recent years including obtaining a waiver of tax for large commercial vehicles during the pandemic in Telangana, securing free parking and facilities for platform workers at the Hyderabad Airport, and negotiating improved terms of employment by cab aggregators on sharing drop locations and settling payments.
The report also highlights key worker support initiatives by TGPWU such as the distribution of grocery and medical kits during the pandemic, offering scholarship programmes for children of workers, and co-organising free E-Shram registration camps.
Join us to build worker power. Together we stand, together we fight.
